About The Driving Mentor
Your Guide to Automatic & EV Driving in the UK
Welcome to The Driving Mentor — a national driving education platform built specifically for automatic and electric vehicle learner drivers across the UK.
I’m Wayne Smith, a DVSA approved driving instructor based in Ely, Cambridgeshire, with years of experience helping people become confident, capable, and safe drivers. Alongside running WS Driving School locally, I created The Driving Mentor to share that expertise with learners far beyond Cambridgeshire — wherever you are in the UK, whatever stage of your journey you’re at.
This platform exists because automatic and EV learner drivers deserve a resource built specifically for them. Almost every driving guide, theory test app, and online resource assumes you’re learning in a manual car. That’s changing — and The Driving Mentor is here for the drivers leading that change.
My Experience as a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor
I’ve spent years teaching learner drivers of all backgrounds, abilities, and confidence levels. I’ve worked with people who are nervous about their first lesson, people who’ve failed their test more than once and lost faith in themselves, people who struggle with anxiety behind the wheel, and people who simply want to become genuinely good drivers rather than just pass a test.
That breadth of experience shapes everything on this platform. The advice here isn’t theoretical — it comes from real lessons with real people on real roads.
As a DVSA approved instructor I follow the highest standards set by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency. But I go further than that. My approach is rooted in coaching rather than instruction — helping you understand not just what to do but why, so that the skills you develop stay with you long after the test is done.
I live by the Lagom philosophy — the Swedish principle of balance, simplicity, and intentional living. You’ll find that reflected in everything here. No unnecessary complexity. No jargon. No pressure. Just calm, honest guidance that genuinely works.
Why Automatic & EV?
Automatic cars are the fastest growing segment in UK driving. Electric vehicles are accelerating that shift further. And yet the learner driver who chooses an automatic or EV has almost nowhere to go for content built specifically for them.
The Driving Mentor fills that gap.
Learning in an automatic removes one of the biggest sources of stress for new drivers — the gearbox. Without the complexity of clutch control and gear changes, your brain has more capacity to focus on what actually matters: reading the road, building awareness, and developing the habits of a safe driver.
If you’re learning in an EV, you’re already driving the future. This platform is built for you too.
What The Driving Mentor Offers
The platform is built around genuinely useful content at every stage of your learning journey:
Expert Blog Content — practical, honest articles covering theory test preparation, mindset and confidence, test day guidance, automatic and EV driving, road safety, and life beyond the test. Written by a working instructor, not a content farm.
Free Guides and Resources — accessible, helpful materials to support your learning without any cost.
Ebooks — in-depth guides on specific aspects of driver education, from passing your theory test to becoming a safer driver in your first year.
Community — The Driving Mentor Facebook group (The Driving Mentor — Automatic & EV Learners UK) is a growing national community of automatic and EV learners. Join here: facebook.com/groups/thedrivingmentoruk
PDI Resources — thinking about becoming a driving instructor? I support trainee instructors through ADI Parts 1 and 2, with Part 3 support in development. This platform is a resource for the next generation of instructors too.
Supporting Different Types of Learners
Automatic Learner Drivers Everything you need from your first lesson to the day you drive away from the test centre alone. Guides, tips, and honest advice built around the automatic driving experience.
EV Learner Drivers Specialist content for those learning in electric vehicles — what’s different, what to expect, and why it’s one of the best choices you can make.
Nervous and Anxious Drivers Driving anxiety is more common than most people admit. The Driving Mentor addresses the mental side of learning head-on — with practical, evidence-based strategies to help you manage nerves and build genuine confidence.
Newly Passed Drivers Passing your test is the beginning, not the end. The Beyond The Test section covers everything from your first solo drive to advanced driving qualifications — because the first year is statistically the most dangerous of your entire driving life.
Trainee Driving Instructors (PDIs) Honest guidance for anyone considering a career in driver training — from the ADI qualification process to the books worth reading before you spend a penny on a franchise.
Why Choose The Driving Mentor?
Niche Expertise — The only national platform built specifically for automatic and EV learner drivers in the UK. Not a general driving site with an automatic section — a platform built from the ground up for this audience.
Real-World Experience — Every piece of content comes from years of teaching real students on real roads. This is practical knowledge, not theory.
Road Safety at the Heart of Everything — The Driving Mentor exists because road safety matters. Young drivers aged 17 to 24 make up just 6% of licence holders but are involved in 24% of fatal and serious collisions. Every guide, every article, and every resource on this platform is built around the belief that passing a test is not enough. Becoming a safe driver for life is the goal.
Calm, Honest, Human — No jargon, no pressure, no unrealistic promises. Just straightforward guidance delivered with the warmth and patience of a good instructor.
Carbon Neutral — The Driving Mentor’s partnership with WS Driving School reflects a commitment to sustainability. WS Driving School is Carbon Neutral Britain certified.
WS Driving School — Local Instruction in Ely
If you’re local to Ely, Cambridgeshire, I also operate WS Driving School, serving the CB6 and CB7 postcode areas including Ely, Witchford, and Soham.
From Easter 2026, WS Driving School operates exclusively with automatic transmission vehicles — a Ford Puma ST Line automatic — with 90-minute lesson durations for focused, efficient learning.
Students test at Cambridge, King’s Lynn, and Bury St Edmunds test centres. I’m familiar with all three and prepare students specifically for their chosen test centre.
WS Driving School is entirely separate from The Driving Mentor as a business — but the expertise and values behind both are the same.
